This week LUV is spotlighting USA Today bestselling author Melonie Johnson, her smart funny contemporary romances include her upcoming rom-com, Too Wrong to be Right, the follow-up to Too Good to Be Real, and her award-winning Sometimes in Love debut series: Getting Hot with the Scot, Smitten by the Brit, and Once Upon a Bad Boy. LUV: What is the best thing about being a romance writer? What is the most challenging thing about being a romance writer? Melonie: From the moment of inspiration when I get the first tickle of an idea for a new story to holding the finished book in my hands, there are a lot of wonderful things about being a romance writer. I think the best thing of all is when readers connect with the characters I have created and are invested in their journey to a happily ever after. What I’ve found most challenging in my career as a romance writer is striking the balance between all the many hats an author must wear: from drafting stories to editing manuscripts to marketing and publicity, maintaining an online presence and engaging on social media and building a following, it all takes time and energy and a wide variety of skills and knowledge. Sometimes I struggle with switching between “writer brain” (the more creative parts of the work) and “author brain” (the more business parts). But at the end of the day, it all comes down to getting my stories into the hands of readers, and the joy that comes when they love something I’ve written…which brings me full circle.
