Part #3 of our chat with @Elle Beauregard LUV: What is your favorite romance movie or TV show that really captures the essence of a romance novel? Can you explain how it does so? Elle: Catch and Release (Susannah Grant, 2006) It’s delightfully angsty, somber and funny at the same time, with well-drawn, complex characters and a lovely romantic arc. In fact, I love the character arcs of both the leads (Jennifer Garner and Timothy Oliphant) separately and together. Plus, I felt like the movie did an excellent job balancing all the emotions that come with grief and love at the same time. We get to watch Gray (Garner) go from thinking she’s lost everything, to a deep sense of betrayal and (completely justified) anger, and then acceptance. At the end, watching her craft the life she wants—that’s better than anything she would have had before—was so genuinely triumphant and heartwarming I had a smile on my face for the rest of the day. That’s what makes me love romance most—watching characters create something together that’s even better than what they thought they wanted before meeting/coming together.
