Part #3 of our chat with @Laurie Beach LUV: Many people dream about being a writer. What is the one thing you wish you had known when you started your career? Laurie: I believe that, in general, a person won’t have a burning desire to do something if they don’t also have the ability. I wish I’d had more confidence when I began my writing career. I was constantly looking for validation, and it was excruciating waiting for those first reviews. I’d barely allowed anyone to read my books until suddenly they were widely available for everyone. I should have believed people when they said they loved my work instead of convincing myself that they didn’t want to hurt my feelings. Writing and publishing a book puts you in a vulnerable place. I recommend viewing that vulnerability as a strength. Enter into writing and publication with a curiosity about learning the business. Don’t focus on numbers or reviews or how well other authors are doing. As a matter of fact, be in their corner. Read those authors who are getting the results you want, watch them online, cheer them on. They are not about to steal that epic book that lives in your head. Their words and thoughts will never be like yours. Set the competition aside and embrace that you get to be part of a rich, artistic community. There’s room for all of us, and you’ll have a better experience if you join in the fun.
