Part #4 of our chat with author @JuliaAmante LUV: Do you have any suggestions for others who want to write romance fiction? Julia: Yes, romance fiction is the most diverse as far as subgenres and the most rewarding type of fiction to write. No matter what you like, fantasy, paranormal, romantic comedy, historical or contemporary fiction, you will find a place in the romance genre. As long as you remember that the key aspect of a romance novel is the romance. It must feature prominently in your story. So, my suggestions are: 1. Choose a sub-genre (or category) that you love to read. 2. Read in it extensively until you feel you could finish the author’s story for them. 3. Find a writing community to support you. Almost every state has a romance writing group or organization. If you can’t find one locally, you can join one online. This will help to support you, teach you about the craft, and connect you with other writers, readers, and publishing professionals. 4. Study story structure, even if you choose not to create an outline or plot. Understanding how a story is put together will save you from getting lost or writing a dull story. 5. Write daily! If you want to be a writer, you must write every day and skip the excuses. We all have families and second jobs, even published authors, so we can’t allow other obligations to get in the way of our dream. 6. Have fun and enjoy the process. Writing is hard and publishing is even harder, but if you love what you’re doing, you will love even the hard parts.
