Part #4 of our chat with @Dabney Grinnan LUV: Romance movies are more and more popular on television. What are you watching and liking? What are the tv movies/shows getting right and what could they do better? I don’t watch a lot of romance because I like to read but I have watched “Bridgerton” and “Virgin River” because my husband likes both. My mother who married her high school sweetheart and was recently widowed watches one every night. One thing the small screen is getting right is the agency of women. In blockbusters the much older man/young girl is common but this dynamic does not fly on the small screen. TV does a phenomenal job telling women’s stories. “Virgin River” is one of Netflix’s most popular shows dealing with a woman who lost a baby and a husband, trying to get along with her sister who is going through a divorce. This is women’s stories being told as if they are fascinating I do think the industry needs to employ more women. Stories written by women can give greater authenticity. I like what Reese Witherspoon is doing. Hiring women to tell the stories. Her stories feel real, not like a cartoon. It will be interesting to see how season two of “Bridgerton” does. If it’s as big a success as season one, it will encourage people to make bigger well written romance stories. The small screen is really good at bringing diversity to romance. Not just the casting on “Bridgerton” – I loved it—so many of Netflix teen rom-coms have Asian and Black leads. It seems a good place to offer a variety of characters to people who are open to diverse stories. TV is doing a good job at amplifying the things we do in romance.
