Part #3 of our chat with author @lucyfelthouse LUV: What is the best thing about being a romance writer? What is the most challenging thing about being a romance writer? Lucy: The absolute best thing is getting messages from readers, or meeting them in real life, and having them say how much they liked book X, Y or Z. When you’re sitting at a laptop tapping out words and sentences, you have no idea whether anyone is even going to read it. And if they do, whether they’re going to like it. So knowing you’ve given someone else enjoyment from your words is just incredible. One of the most challenging things about being a romance writer is the assumptions people make. Because my books are usually steamy right up to full on erotic, people seem to assume I’ve done everything I’ve written about. Quite aside from the fact I’d never write about my private life, you’d think it’d be pretty obvious, given the variety of my work, that I can’t possibly have a harem, AND just one partner, AND be a lesbian/bisexual/a gay man, AND have had sex with vampires, werewolves and much more besides, right? I mean, I’ve been doing this a long time now, so I’m used to those sorts of questions and comments, but they continue to baffle me. I mean, do these same people ask crime writers whether they’ve ever murdered someone? Buried a body? Conducted a post-mortem? It’s so bizarre to think that all writers are essentially just pulling worlds from their imagination, but only romance writers must have done everything they’ve written about! 😊
