This week LUV's spotlighting Heather Waters, who's the Director of Marketing at Simon & Schuster. LUV: You have held a very varied career in romance publishing. Can you tell us about how you started working in publishing and the various steps that have led you to your current position? Heather: Plenty of twists and turns to my career so far, that’s for sure. All through school, I was focused on becoming an editor, and my first full-time job was as an editorial assistant at a tiny, family-owned publishing house in Sarasota, Florida, called Pineapple Press. A couple years later, a friend who knew about both my experience in publishing and passion for romance novels generously recommended me for a position as a production associate at Macmillan, where I’d be working on a brand-new online romance community. It didn’t have a name at the time but soon became known as Heroes & Heartbreakers, also fondly referred to as H&H. Six and a half years at H&H taught me that marketing, not editorial, was the publishing path for me. After Macmillan closed down the community, I accepted a new role at Simon & Schuster as a Senior Manager of Content Verticals, and at first I focused on managing their lifestyle category vertical, Tips on Life & Love. My role has evolved over time, however, and I’m currently a Director of Corporate Marketing, responsible for the Simon & Schuster Corporate social media accounts and the bookish blog www.OffTheShelf.com. (And here’s where I say: All the opinions in this interview are my own.)
