Part #4 of our chat with @jesseverlee LUV: What is your writing schedule like? Are you a full-time writer or do you juggle a second profession? Jess: While I’ve had the variety of odd jobs that English majors often stumble into, I am lucky enough to have a partner who works in a much more lucrative industry than I do. I’m a full-time writer now, but am certainly not bringing in a full-time income yet. I hope to someday, but that will take time to build. As for the daily schedule, I try to do as much writing in the morning as possible. My mind is sharpest before lunchtime, and I am at my least sociable, so it just makes sense! If I get stuck, I’ll spend time doing historical research or reading books that relate to what I’m working on. During the editing of A RULEBOOK FOR RESTLESS ROGUES, for instance, one of the heroes is a bespoke tailor in 1885, so I got a book about the Henry Poole & Co. tailor’s shop in London, and would read about interesting pieces and clients through the ages for inspiration. In the afternoon, I tend to all the communication and promotional aspects of the job. There are a lot of those! Even just a newsletter, occasional blog, and a bare minimum of social media presence takes time and organization, and it seems like there’s always an email about something or other coming my way. I’ve actually learned to have a lot of fun with that stuff, once I got the hang of it. Then I try to be present for my family once that’s wrapped up. Not every day goes quite like this, but I feel my best and do my best work when I manage to stick to something close to that.
