This week LUV's spotlighting author @Mariah Ankenman LUV: What is the best thing about being a romance writer? What is the most challenging thing about being a romance writer? Mariah: The best thing about being a romance writer is creating stories you know will bring a smile to readers’ faces. The romance genre is all about hope, finding and accepting love. My favorite thing about being a romance writer is when someone says my books made them smile on a bad day, or they’re a safe place to escape to when times are rough. I love providing that happy safe space for people. The worst thing about being a romance writer is all the hate and disgusting things non-romance readers say. I’ve gotten everything from “oh you write mommy porn?” to “you can’t write trash like that as a mom” to “I can help you with the sex scenes *wink*” to “Fabio!” Dude hasn’t been on a romance cover in ages, but people still bring him up. Society looks down on romance novels as trashy, but those people have never actually read one. Romance has everything from zero spice to five alarm fires. It has all types of pairings and groupings. It contains all the subgrenes from contemporary to historical to outer space and more! I fully believe that there’s a romance out there for everyone. It’s the best genre there is (and the highest selling) and deserves more respect.
