This week LUV is spotlighting author @megancrane! She's a USA Today bestselling, multi-award-nominated, and critically-acclaimed author who's written more than 135 books, and shows no sign of slowing down. She publishes romance as Megan Crane and M.M. Crane — and Megan has an exciting backlist of women’s fiction, chick lit, and young adult novels. She’s also won a large and loyal fanbase as Caitlin Crews with Harlequin Presents, Harlequin Dare, Harlequin Historical, and contemporary cowboy books. LUV: Many people dream about being a writer. What is the one thing you wish you had known when you started your career? Megan: I wish I’d understood that writing and publishing are two different games entirely. Both require very different things. It’s best to remember that while writing is enormously personal, publishing never is—maybe especially when it feels like it! So my advice before you get published is this: focus on your writing. Tell your story. Everything flows from there. And after you’re published? Well, it’s easy to feel a bit bruised, because publishing can be a cruel business, but remember: it’s never personal. Whether it feels like it to you or not. All you really have, still, are the same tools: Focus on your writing. Tell your story. Everything else is noise. Because the reality is that you can always figure out how to publish something, somewhere. But first you have to have something to publish. Remember that no one else can tell your story—only you can. If you don’t, no one will ever love it like you do. Focus on the writing: tell your story. That’s the beginning and the end of everything. (And yes, I literally chant that to myself when I’m not sure I can finish the book I’m writing…)
