Part #3 of our chat with author Dani Collins LUV: When did you know you wanted to be a writer? How did you embark on the journey to publication? Do you have any suggestions for others who want to write romance? Dani: I read my first romance in high school and knew I wanted to write them for a living. I’m old enough that my first manuscript was written on a rented typewriter. It took me 25 years to sell my first book! I submitted to pretty much every publisher with a transom, but I always came back to my first love, Harlequin Presents. In 2012, I was offered a two-book contract and I haven’t looked back! I’ve since published over 50 books with Harlequin and 20 with other publishers (Tule, Entangled, and Indie). Advice for aspiring writers: Don’t wait for permission. Sit down and start writing. If it’s terrible, that’s okay. You learn to write a book by writing a book. Muddle through until you’ve finished it, then write another one. That’s the secret to a career. Write a book, then write another one. Don’t compare yourself to others, simply focus on what you can do. If that’s one book a year or ten, that’s okay. Keep writing and one day you’ll look back and go, “Oh. I guess I have the career I always dreamed of.”
