Part #2 of our chat with author, Rochelle Alers. @roclers LUV: What is your favorite romance movie or television show that really captures the essence of romance novels? Can you explain how it does so? Rochelle: I am addicted to Jane Austen. I have an omnibus of all her novels as well as the DVDs. Although her novels were published more than two hundred years ago, the social mores of her landed gentry characters still resonate today. Most modern women, despite having many more advantages Regency period women lacked, they still want what Jane Austen’s heroines were looking for. They don’t need someone to take care of them as much as they want love and their own happily ever after. The will he or won’t he, does she or doesn’t she interaction between Austen’s protagonists is what keeps viewers watching her movies and reading her novels over and over. My favorite Austen’s novels and films are Mansfield Park and Pride and Prejudice. I have also overindulged on the Hallmark Channel, and I can honestly say that I’ve seen most of their movies at least once. Some more than twice. I have binged on Downton Abbey and Bridgerton and watched Belle so often that I’m familiar with the dialogue. Aside from the contemporary movies featured on the Hallmark Channel, most of my favorites are period drama movies.
