In Part #3 of our interview @Justine Wentzell-Chang discusses her new film, A Big Fat Family Christmas, which premieres tonight at 8/7C on the Hallmark Channel. LUV: Can you tell us about A Big Fat Family Christmas. What is the premise and your inspiration? Justine: A Big Fat Family Christmas is about a woman who is still learning to be comfortable with all of who she is, and thanks to the help of a new friend and colleague, gains a new perspective this Christmas. The inspiration was the common struggles I and many Asian Americans have experienced growing up being seen as the perpetual foreigner. That’s why I specifically wrote a story about a 3rd and 4th generation Chinese American family. I set the story in San Francisco, where so much of Chinese American and Asian American history is inextricably tied to San Franciscan and US history. But also, to this day, we continue to see our AAPI community constantly attacked. Many of the attacks have and continue to happen in the Bay Area (though they’re still happening everywhere), and so I wanted to bring joy back to our community and especially the Chinatowns which are historical symbols of East meets West. I hope that the little bit of history we were able to share will spark curiosity in viewers to learn a little bit more about what’s left out of our history books. And with all that said, it is still very much the fun and light-hearted Christmas movie Hallmark viewers expect and want ☺. I hope everyone has a good laugh while watching it.
