Part #4 of our chat with network executive, Nataline Rodrigues. LUV: Did you see any specific romance content trends that connected more with audiences? Did seasonal romances perform stronger than non-seasonal? Nataline: While many viewers continue to look for the entertaining, vicarious thrill of the happily ever after fantasy that romantic movies provide, in terms of trends, the days of damsels in distress are gone with viewers responding better to strong female leads. Viewers are connecting to more assertive, life affirming, leading ladies, who have aspirational careers set in popular media, design, culinary and home improvement worlds. Viewers are also craving escapist entertainment – which has grown during the pandemic. I see more stories about escaping big city life for the calmer, greener pastures of smaller towns and country living grow in popularity. The longing for simpler times and less complications is definitely coming through in the storytelling. As is a desire to see audiences better reflected in the movies they are watching. Movies that take a more inclusive approach to casting, that feature diversity are garnering more attention and attracting new audiences. Cozy mysteries, with charming romantic storylines woven throughout the intrigue are also attracting more and more audiences who love a good mystery, with a dash of romance and less dark and grisly cases. Seasonal romances, especially Christmas, that tap into nostalgia, offering not just classic visual eye candy but also hope and inspiration, that make us want to believe in the power of love and miracles, definitely continue to be popular and surprisingly not just at Christmas.
