Part #3 of our chat with author Heatherly Bell. LUV: Do you have any suggestions for others who want to write romance? Heatherly: If you want to write romance, you really have to read a lot of romance. If you want to write for Harlequin, for instance, read a lot in the line that you’d like to sell to. It isn’t enough to watch Hallmark movies and think, wow, I bet I can do that. There are so many nuances to writing and bringing characters and a setting to life. Writing is also more than a good plot. You can have the most wonderful plot but if the reader doesn’t care about your character, and their journey, nothing works. Learn what makes a character sympathetic to the reader. The most important advice I would have for a new writer is to find your own voice. You can only do that by firing the internal editor who sits on your shoulder and criticizes every word you write. Believe in yourself and write. Revise. Then write some more.
