Part #2 of our chat with Morgan and Isabeau from Whoa!mance LUV: How did you two meet? Did you share your love for romance immediately or was it a slow burn? Morgan: I guess a slow burn. We met in grad school, and I hadn’t read any romance, just romance theory - as you do when working on a thesis about fan fiction. And after graduation I was in a deep dark reading slump and Isabeau suggested Tessa Dare. I guess that would’ve been like 10 months after meeting, is 10 months a slow burn? LUV: Why romance? Isabeau: Romance as we’ve discovered over the course of this adventure is just a never ending well. It can be wild, weird, and sometimes delicious. Pleasure is powerful, and a genre that takes seriously the pleasures of women, and that is primarily made and consumed by women is a great space to investigate. Because much like pop music, or other things that femme people enjoy there seems to a broader move to not take it seriously. Before doing the podcast I had an inkling about how deep Romance could be, but since we’ve started we’ve just peeled this onion we just find more to discuss. LUV: What should a listener expect from Whoa!mance. If they are new to you, where should they start? Morgan: Hot takes, contention, adoration, a loooot of energy. And, this may sound corny, but I think some shared self-discovery and friendship. Isabeau and I really are friends and this is really us talking to each other about ourselves and our world via these books. Inviting other people in is scary because we can get messy, but it’s ultimately thrilling to share that.
