This week LUV's spotlighting author Regina Kyle. Regina writes steamy romance with heart and humor. She is a three-peat winner of the Booksellers’ Best award: in 2016 for Triple Dare, 2018 for The Billionaire in Her Bed, and 2020 for Dirty Work. LUV: What is your writing schedule like? Are you a full time writer or do you juggle a second profession? Regina: I’m not a full-time writer, although I hope to be in a few years when I can retire. My full-time job (the one that pays the bills) is as a senior assistant state’s attorney—what most people call a prosecutor. By day, I write dry legal briefs on behalf of the state in criminal appeals. I do most of my romance writing at lunch or in the evenings after dinner. I call it “sneak writing.” Basically, my laptop is always with me, and I sneak in a hundred words or so whenever I can and hope that at the end of the day it adds up to something substantial. Not that fastest method, I know, but I work with what I’ve got and keep plugging away. For the most part, I really like my day job, although sometimes I resent the time that it takes away from my writing. But I’ve always had an interest in criminal law, even from a young age. I read so many true crime books in middle and high school that my mom used to say I was either going to become a serial killer, marry one in prison, or become a prosecutor. (I think I chose the right path LOL.) And true crime books and shows are still one of my not-so-guilty pleasures. Given my job and my interest in all things crime-related, people often ask me why I don’t write romantic suspense. And they’ve got a point. I mean, my work sure gives me plenty of plot material for that kind of stuff. But I think I shy away from it when it comes to romance because I get my fill of that kind of writing at the day job. I prefer my romance writing—and reading—to be a little more on the lighter side. And that’s what you’ll get in my books: heat (I’m an open-door sex scenes kind of gal), heart, and humor. Kristan Higgins, who I’m lucky enough to count as one of my good writer friends, described my writing as “fast, sassy, and laugh-out-loud funny,” and I think that sums it up pretty well. So well that I borrowed it for my tag line LOL.
