Banter and all things nice… ⭐️ Book Review ⭐ Honey & Spice Author: Bolu Babalola Book Rating ⭐️⭐⭐️✨ Do you ever wish you could rate the first and second half of books differently? I honestly struggled to get through the first half of this book. It was like a Nigerian Aaron Sorkin wrote it. SO MUCH BANTER! Look, I like banter, I love it when used sparingly, BUT when the whole narrative becomes characters trying to one up each other I’m out. It’s a big turnoff for me when writing, whether it be for print or for screen, shows its author. I want the dialog to feel natural and organic, not so piffy! BUT if you can get past the quipiness of the first half you will be treated to a delectable romance using the fake dating trope. Kiki is a University radio show host. Her show, Brown Sugar, helps young women navigate the new dating world order. She has purposely kept herself guarded and removed from the dating scene. Her professor says if she can boost her following she will put her forward for a big internship in NYC. She makes a deal with FBoy Malakai. They will fake date, he will participate in her radio show and she will help him with his film. Where I think Babalola shines is her date writing. Once the bravado is dropped and these two characters really talk, it’s magic. They are beautiful, and they grow and evolve together. Usually it’s just the lead character that goes through a major transformation, but this romance is really well balanced. The heat level is low, but the feels are high. I could’ve used less spice but the honey is oh so sweet. #QOTD - What’s your fav romance trope? #AOTD - I love a friends to lovers
