This week LUV's spotlighting author, @Jade Lee - Kathy Lyons. Kathy Lyons is the wild, adventurous half of USA TODAY bestselling author Jade Lee. LUV: What is your writing schedule like? Are you a full-time writer or do you juggle a second profession? Kathy/Jade: I’m a full-time writer, which is a lot like saying I’m a full-time mother. Everything I do can be applied somehow to my job, and there’s a never-ending list of more that I could do. Yes, I know what you’re really asking is if I have another job on top of being a writer. I don’t. At least not one that pays in money. I’m a grandmother and am at this very moment, doing this interview during nap time. I’m also a daughter of an Alzheimer’s patient. Thankfully, my father has support, but I’m the first line of defense whenever something fails. I recently learned the nuclear family of mom, dad, and 2.5 kids in a single-family home is the product of the US between 1950-1966. For the rest of human development, the “family” was a multi-generational group that all lived in a similar geographic location if not a single home. Certainly, there are drawbacks to that. Many hands make for light work, but many mouths meant dinner has to be made for 25. Today, I feel like my second job is as the support person running between the different branches of my family, helping however I can. Which all feeds into the magic of my writing. Like me, my characters experience the weight of caring for an aging parent. They’re also learning (or remembering) how an explosive diaper can completely change a day. And they’re feeling the delight of a toddler who is learning to throw a ball. So I don’t have another job at all. It’s all my writing, and it’s all life. After all, that’s what stories are, right?
